Modeling entrepreneurial orientation: Conceptualization and measurement issues Reza Yamini and Mikko Rönkkö, University of Jyväskylä Abstract Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) construct is one of the most commonly used constructs in entrepreneurship research. Yet, we argue that there are problems in both how EO is conceptualized and measured. First, we critically review the shortcomings of current EO conceptualization by asking what EO means and how specifically it is related to entrepreneurship or the three dimensions of innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking through which it is commonly measured. Second, we argue that both reflective and formative measurement models that are used to model EO are problematic. To support this argument, we provide both simulation and meta-analytical evidence. We conclude that the three dimensions should be analyzed separately instead of aggregating them as a single variable as currently done in the EO literature.
