"Cinderella Girl" is a noteworthy song composed by Jerome Kern, featured in his 1926 Broadway musical Criss-Cross. The show was produced by Charles Dillingham at the Globe Theatre, and opened October 12, 1926. It ran for 210 performances, closing on April 9, 1927. The cast headlined Fred Stone (at age 53) and his daughter Dorothy Stone (at age 21). Stone had a long career in minstrel shows, vaudeville, on Broadway, and in both silent and talking films. He starred as the Scarecrow in the very first musical version of The Wizard of Oz in 1902 (on Broadway for 293 performances, and touring for seven years). As noted by theatre historian Gerald Bordman, "From the start Criss Cross was rarely perceived as a Kern show. Fred Stone dominated any of his vehicles with his homey clowning and live acrobatics. ... Kern and his associates hardly ever received more than a perfunctory mention." For me it is Kern's melody that captures the heart, and makes it memorable, even if the show is forgotten.
