In Chapter 7 – Part 6, we configure the run controls for the damBreak case in OpenFOAM: time-step settings, writing results correctly, and (new in this chapter) using Function Objects to automatically sample data during the simulation. What we do in this video ✅ controlDict essentials (system/controlDict) Confirm solver: interFoam Run time range: startTime = 0 → endTime = 1 Base time-step: deltaT = 0.001 ✅ Consistent output times Use writeControl = adjustableRunTime Why it matters: even if the solver adjusts deltaT, your results are still written at correct physical time intervals. ✅ NEW: Function Objects — Sampling during the run We use the functions dictionary to enable sampling, and configure it in the separate file system/sampling. Inside system/sampling, we cover: Sampling type + library (sampling function object) When sampling runs (time-based + write interval) Output format (VTK) + interpolation method (e.g., cellPointFace) Which fields to sample (example: U, pressure field, alpha.water) Sampling sets: Gauge 1 and Gauge 2 Plane definition (start/end points) Normal direction (Y-axis) Number of sampling points (resolution) Next part (Part 7) We’ll go into the numerical schemes required for this case: which schemes are used, why they matter, and how to set them correctly. #OpenFOAM #CFD #DamBreak #interFoam #controlDict #deltaT #adjustableRunTime #FunctionObjects #Sampling #VTK #ParaView #MultiphaseFlow #VOF #OpenFOAMTutorial #Linux
