"End of an Era: Britain's Retreat from Ireland, 1922". The withdrawal and disbandment of the police and military forces that imposed and sustained British rule in Ireland is often overlooked in the drama of the Civil War, but marked the end of British rule and the first steps towards an independent - but partitioned - Irish state. The presentation will be based on a project Mr Hoyt is currently co-authoring with Dr Patrick McCarthy of the Military History Society of Ireland. Professor Hoyt is the John Nicholas Brown Chair of the Counterterrorism at the Newport Naval War College.
