In this episode, I’m joined by author Marissa Burt, a mom of six, to talk about parenting, faith, and the generational impact of Christian parenting culture. We discuss what it’s like balancing time and intentionality with kids, the pressure to over-research parenting decisions, how she ended up in the Pacific Northwest, and why every child requires a different approach. Much of our conversation centers on Marissa’s new book, co-written with Kelsey Kramer McGinnis, The Myth of Good Christian Parenting: How False Promises Betrayed a Generation of Evangelical Families. The book takes a deep dive into the Christian parenting teachings many of us were raised on—examining who wrote the books our parents read, the legacy those teachings left behind, and their lasting impact on families and faith. Marissa and Kelsey thoughtfully explore the culture of evangelical parenting communities while asking an important question: Were these teachings actually biblical—or simply cultural? We also talk about how parenting often involves looking back at your own childhood and deciding which patterns to repeat and which ones to change. For those who have deconstructed their faith or were raised in church environments, this conversation—and this book—offers language for experiences and feelings many of us have struggled to name. 📘 The book is available wherever books are sold and on Audible.
