Sailing the Mona off Puerto Rico! On our Morgan 41 Out Island Ketch! Cayo Caracoles is just around the corner, south & east, from our marina home at Puerto Real. We can generally be at the free Department of Natural resources mooring area in 4 hours. It's a favorite because the water is crystal clear. The snorkeling is amazing, AND the bioluminescent cove is just a mile away. I am hoping the next New Moon on 9/6/21 will be our first snorkel with the dinoflagellates that create the amazing glow! This trip was cloudy both nights and just not optimal. We did go in the cove by dinghy and determine it would make a great "Hurricane hole"! Typically here on the Puerto Rico west coast we have no wind from sunset-is until mid morning. Then the Trade Winds kick up and it can really blow! The only variation of that is if there is a storm front blowing thru. One of the blessings of our location is the protection we are afforded by the surrounding mountains. On the WindyTY app we nearly always look like a blue plume of calm when the other three coasts are orange with wind! Of course, our day to sail home was the acceptation! The breeze was light, variable, and from the west! This created a mill pond affect on the Mona Pass. We had just enough air to push us to an average speed of 4.5 knots, and less than a half foot of wave height! I was calm and amazing! As we rounded the corner we had a great view of the Cabo Rojo lighthouse that was completed by Spain before 1898 when Puerto Rico became a US territory. Our next stop-the harbour at Boqueron. Here there's a beautiful beach to run and play on, several restaurants, and bars, one with a pool table to keep the boys entertained! The Main Street is lined with vendors-pinchos, seafood, local sweet oysters $5/doz... and gifts of all types! The harbour has clear water despite the marinas and buildings along the shore. We love a place where we can jump in for a swim with Tarpon, sea turtles, and frequently Manatees. This anchorage puts us about an hour from the dock.
