Featuring HolacracyOne co-founder Brian Robertson. http://holacracy.org I think there's often some confusion about how does Holacracy relate to another method called Sociocracy, which emerged in the Netherlands a little while ago, about 50, 60 years now, in its modern form. And there's definitely some shared history early in the development of Holacracy, when we went out looking for different methods and techniques and all that, Sociocracy was one of a small handful of different systems and methods and ideas and all that we found and studied. And there are aspects of Holacracy that were direct influences from Sociocracy. At the same time, the overall method at this point is almost completely different in the intent and in the underlying paradigm -- and somewhat similar in some of the mechanics of some of the processes, and very different in the mechanics of other processes. It's a pretty nuanced topic to sum up. In short, the quick summation would be the paradigm is different; Sociocracy is a governance method to govern people; Holacracy is not; actually, there's a rule in the whole system; people are not even allowed to be governed by it. Holacracy is a governance system for an organization around structuring the organization. In Sociocracy, the realms that we call in Holacracy governance and operations, there's isn't a clean distinction or a clear encoding system for the governance, because the two are not separated. In Holacracy, there's a very clear governance versus operations; they are two different domains; they have different types of meanings, they have totally different types of meetings and decision-making processes. Governance has an output that is a specific code. There are role definitions that comes out of governance that mean something very specific and that convey power operationally. Roles have purpose, scope, and accountabilities, and each of those conveys a different authority to the role-filler in the operational realm. And you're not allowed to make operational decisions in these governance meetings, so there's a lot of differences for those familiar with Sociocracy, and there I'm just touching the tip of the iceberg. There's also huge differences, although both methods use language around objections in a certain decision-making process, in Sociocracy, that decision-making process can be applied to pretty much anything. In Holacracy, there's very specific outputs allowed from that decision-making process, and it's not allowed to be used for any kind of operational decision, and then the definition of objection is completely different between the two methods. And that results in some very different behavior from the methods as well. There are many other distinctions you might make as well, but that's at least a short summary.
