Joined by the spellbinding presence that is Mah Damba, the prayers or pagan hymns offered up by the trio founded by Clement Janinet are elevated by the power of griot art. Mah Damba – recognized by her peers as one of Mali's greatest working female singers – is a djeli: a Mandingo griot who uses her voice to carve out clear yet complex expressions of praise. Magnificent and moving. The Malian poet illuminates the trio's intimate interplay with fascinating simplicity, bringing a captivating air of clarity. Never one to be caught up in pretension, Mah Damba uses the liveliness of her lines and the delicacy of her melodies to electrify. The contemplative woodiness becomes fierce and unifying. Accustomed to the inherent imbalances of the number three since the trio was created in 2019, the music of Clément Janinet, accompanied by Élodie Pasquier on clarinets and Bruno Ducret on cello, takes on a new finery as a quartet. The presence of the priestess in exile infuses the grand movements, slow tempos and harmonic contemplations with a new edge and a sense of camaraderie. The improvisation remains free and introspective, with repeated motifs that generate sparks and masterful epics, as well as personal riots and boisterous, fiery tales, whispered in your ear from the tops of tall trees. https://www.clementjaninet.site/la-li...
