Witness one of Japan’s most powerful and meaningful New Year traditions — the Sagichō Fire Festival, also known as Dondoyaki. Held across Japan on January 14th or 15th, Sagichō is a cherished community event where families gather to burn New Year’s decorations and pray for health, happiness, and good fortune in the year ahead. The flames symbolize purification, renewal, and a fresh start. In Oiso, the tradition takes on a breathtaking scale at the Oiso Sagichō Festival. Held directly on the beach, the festival features nine massive bonfires standing over 8 meters tall, lighting up the winter sky. With a history spanning more than 400 years, this incredible event can be seen from far away — and for many locals, the New Year doesn’t truly begin until Sagichō is complete. In this video, we take you behind the scenes from start to finish: 🔥 The preparation and construction of the towering bonfires 🔥 The traditions passed down through generations 🔥 The powerful moment the fires are ignited on festival day Experience the heat, the energy, and the deep community spirit of this unforgettable celebration. #Sagichō #Dondoyaki #OisoFireFestival #JapaneseFestival #JapanCulture #NewYearJapan #TraditionalFestival #JapanTravel #JapaneseTradition #400YearFestival #冬の祭り #左義長 #どんど焼き #日本の文化 #火祭り 💬 Join the conversation: Have you ever experienced a Japanese festival?
