In this edition of the ZTF science vlog, graduate student Soumyadeep Bhattacharjee at Caltech reveals a number of peculiar discoveries of binary systems (two stars orbiting each other closely) inside planetary nebulae as well as other interesting objects that need not be binaries. Further studies will confirm the exact physical phenomena causing the observed behavior in such systems, but observatories such as ZTF can now discover such rare objects more regularly. The work described in this vlog is now published in two papers: (1) Variability of Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae with the Zwicky Transient Facility. I. Methods, Short-timescale Variables, and the Unusual Nucleus of WeSb 1 - https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10... (2) Variability of Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae with the Zwicky Transient Facility. II. Long-Timescale Variables including Wide Binary and Late Thermal Pulse Candidates - https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/202...
