Adapted Choreography by Anna Feng ’27 and Melissa Wu ’26 | Adapted from Hangzhou Opera and Dance Theater (杭州歌剧舞剧院), Original Choreography by Fuyang Liu (刘福洋) Flagship is AADT’s oldest-lasting traditional ethnic performance with a greater focus on advanced techniques representative of Asian ethnic and folk dance styles. Flagship requires a higher level of involvement and time commitment, including two rehearsals a week and outside performances with the group. This semester’s Flagship is a Chinese classical dance titled《淡妆浓抹总相宜》You Look Good in Light or Heavy Makeup, which is based on a collection of poems called《饮湖上初晴后雨》Drinking at the Lake First in Sunny and Then in Rainy Weather. The first poem describes the scenery at the West Lake (西湖) in Hangzhou (杭州) and invites guests to drink under morning sunlight and evening rain, and the second poem uses a metaphor to convey the charm of the lake and mountains. These poems compare sun and rain to light and heavy makeup, praising the diversity of the West Lake’s beauty. This dance features circular fans (团扇, tuán shàn), which are made of a handle or stick, a rigid frame, and a silk fabric that conforms to the shape of the fan’s frame. In particular, circular fans with Chinese paintings, embroidery, and calligraphy became very popular in the Song Dynasty. Together, this dance offers a tribute to the enduring beauty and poetic spirit of the West Lake, inviting audiences to experience the harmony between nature, art, and tradition.
