When I bought the boat, little to my knowledge the previous owner put a grinder through the back of the keel into the bilge. It was about 1/4" by 5 inches. It was filled with bondo which ended up of course swelling with water. It was covered of course with bottom paint when I bought the boat and it was missed in the survey. When the crane lifted the boat up off the keel and was ready to put into the water the weight of the keel weight pulled down on this spot and the crack appeared; right on launch day! :( I did a quick repair with 4 layer. It was a rough job right on the crane and I was able to hold the spot overnight for a good hardening, My repair held fine (but looked rough) so I wanted to make extra sure and proceeded to sand off the barrier coat and expand the fiberglass repair significantly beyond the repair area. While the boat was on the hard I sanded back both sides and wrapped 4 more layers on both sides to strengthen up the boat's keel. Finishing the repair layers was some fairing compound West Systems Epoxy and 407 before using Interlux 2000e barrier coats. This time she lifted up with no surprises and I also have been diving under and checking her. 00:00 Intro 01:18 Title Ep 81 Keel Repair 01:35 Sanding 03:33 Epoxying and Fiberglass 07:14 Finishing Layers 12:57 Cleanup and Barrier Coats A personal life journey, a reflection, an introduction.
