The Farming Forecaster platform https://www.farmingforecaster.com.au provide regional weather data for farmers and their advisors. Each site has a full weather station with rainfall, air and soil moisture and temperatures, wind speed and direction however, it does not contain information on solar radiation. When rain falls on the NSW coast it is often in the form of a storm and quiet varied so it useful to know how widespread the rain has been and just how much fell in the different locations. This can not only predict grass growth, but also river heights for irrigation as well as pre-empt flood level rises where East Coast Lows fall over part or all of the catchment. The other key is to see how soil moisture is declining or rising across the catchment; this reflects past rainfall and plant water use. At different times of the year, plants will use moisture differently for example 8-10 mm/day in the peak of Summer and only 2-3 mm/day in mid Winter. This has a profound effect on how much longer we can expect good plant growth and hence what and how much rain is stored in the profile.
