The role of a maître d'hotel, French for ‘master of the house’, is traditionally a combination of restaurant host, head waiter, and manager of the dining room. For Chris Papamandjaris, maître d' at The Pointe Restaurant for over 4 years now, it is one of his favourite positions within the restaurant industry. With nearly 4 decades of experience, he has come to learn that the magic of the role lies in the special points of connection made with each and every guest that comes through the doors to The Pointe. Hailing from Toronto originally, Chris worked for years in the big city. Craving a new adventure, he decided to leave the restaurant business for a period of time, replacing the bustle of the city streets with a small farm in Alberta. While rewarding, he discovered this was not his lifelong calling. An opportunity for the maître d' position at a seemingly small Inn in Tofino piqued his interest one day, and he soon found himself on a plane to the West Coast. As he peered out over the Island’s lush forests and vast beaches, the realization dawned on him that he wouldn’t be leaving. Spending time on the farm in Alberta had made him lose his taste for urban living, and the calm nature of Tofino reflected the serenity he had come to appreciate. Chris feels that working here affords him the luxury to be able to provide the very best for our guests while staying aligned with his personal ethos. When looking to the future, Chris aspires to dive into the nuances of his role, continuing to foster the seamless cohesion between the Inn and the fine dining elements of The Pointe. With a keen eye for detail and a desire to go above and beyond, he seeks opportunities to show our guests the one-of-a-kind experience that the Inn has to offer. As many know, restaurants can be a tough business – and with 38 years in the industry, Chris’ dedication to the mastery of his craft is evident. Each and every one of our team members brings their own unique personality, perspectives, and experience to the table; an element that we truly love to celebrate here at the Wick. We hope to welcome you to our little corner of the Island.
