🌍 Welcome to «aliīs vōcibus» — “with other voices” — a series exploring lesser-known and often misunderstood languages. This time, we move to the Atlantic edge — across the Irish Sea — to follow one of the two surviving Celtic paths: the Goidelic, or Gaelic, languages. Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Manx are often grouped together, sometimes even mistaken for dialects of one another. But they are three distinct Celtic languages, closely related yet shaped by migration, geography, and history — from Ireland to the Scottish Highlands and Islands and the Isle of Man. Together, they form the surviving Gaelic branch of the once vast Celtic chain that stretched across Europe. While Continental Celtic languages, like Gaulish, disappeared, these Atlantic voices endured — not unchanged, but continuously reshaped by centuries of cultural pressure, political shifts, and revival efforts. Irish stands as one of Europe’s oldest written vernaculars and remains an official language today, though its role in everyday life is complex. Scottish Gaelic, once dominant in much of Scotland, survives as a minority language deeply tied to the Highlands and Islands. Manx, after falling silent, has been brought back to life through remarkable community-driven revival. These are not relics or echoes of the past. They are living languages — voices of continuity that connect the present to a much older linguistic world. ✨ Feel free to share your thoughts, experiences, or perspectives in the comments.
