Shabads are hymns or spiritual poems written by saints and mystics from different spiritual traditions of the Indian subcontinent. The shabads convey a deep message of truth and are sung with heartfelt devotion. They express the intense longing of the soul for union with the Lord. These songs of devotion are prayers that inspire the true seeker to turn inwards to contact the ultimate Truth – the inner divine music that reverberates within every being. One who is always engaged in selfless service is called a devotee; without service, says Kabir, one cannot be considered a true devotee. One who is always dedicated to service remains unconcerned with anything else, endures pain and pleasure with equanimity, and is a true devotee indeed, explains Kabir. The true devotee’s thinking is aligned with his Master’s; he takes his Master’s words as his canon. Cleverness does not please the Master; only devotion pleases him. He waits patiently at the Master’s door, accepting rebukes and rebuffs with forbearance. Hoping that one day his Master will shower his grace, he never leaves his Master’s door. The Guru loves everyone equally, O Kabir, but no one longs for the Guru; as long as one remains concerned with oneself, one can never be a true devotee. A true devotee is devoted to his Master – he selflessly serves him day and night; one whose heart is not truly devoted, will not be able to face his Master. The one by whose side stands the mighty Guru – how can such a devotee be in want of anything? All miraculous powers serve such a fortunate one and liberation becomes his companion. When the devotee is unhappy so is his Lord; all through the ages, at all times, this is an established fact: he appears within an instant and showers his devotee with untold bliss. The devotee is his Master’s dog – Motia he is called; tied by the leash of love, he faithfully goes wherever he is led. If the Master tells him to go away, readily he goes; if summoned, he runs back with glee. Under all circumstances, he remains content and eats whatever he is given.
