The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scouts BSA National Honor Society. Scout leaders need not think of it as competition and need to promote the OA within the unit. There are many reasons for supporting the OA. It helps retain older Scout, teaches good leadership skills and it’s fun. ScouterStan goes over how you can promote the OA inside the unit. There are adult leader positions within the Troop or Crew where they can serve as an advisor. Keeping a good eye on the OA and unit schedule is important. Scouters should never think that the OA is a distraction on older Scouts from unit leadership. All OA members know that the priorities are with their unit. 🔗LINKS: 🌐 Order of the Arrow Website: https://oa-bsa.org 🌐 OA Representative: https://troopleader.scouting.org/oa-r... 🌐 Unit Representative Adviser Position Description: https://oa-bsa.org/resources/ucl-supp... 🌐 Wiki Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_o... 📺 OA YouTube Channel: / oabsa 🎬 I’ve Been Elected to the Order of the Arrow... The OA is a brotherhood of cheerful service to all. Incorporating the OA in your troop or crew's plans is an essential part of the program. Some adult leaders believe that the OA just distracts their older scouts away from the unit. • Older scouts quickly grow tired of scout skills past first-class and need additional challenges to stay involved. • A troop or crew that has an active OA representation has a built-in service core for the unit and chartering organization. • Over 80% of Eagle Scouts are also members of the OA. It is believed that older scouts are helped by OA retaining them longer in the program. The first step in promoting OA within your unit is to make sure that you have an election every year. Lodge or chapter elections are organized by youth leaders of the OA. If your unit has not been contacted, you should contact your OA advisor (adult). This annual process is known as inductions which has three phases the election, Call-out or Tap-out, and the ordeal. Special unit considerations need to be made for the OA schedule. In the annual planning meeting, the OA schedule should be considered when planning on camping and event dates for the unit. If an unavoidable conflict arises remind OA members that their unit is the primary consideration. Cub Scout leaders need also to consider the OA as a resource to help with their program. Contacting the OA advisor will help determine availability. Adult Cub Scout leaders that are members of the OA may wear the flap and sash when appropriate. Den Chiefs are encouraged to talk about their experiences in the OA to cub scouts. ⏱ Time Stamp & Video Jump List: 0:00 Promoting the OA 1:20 Cheerful Service Of Brotherhood 2:10 Retention Of Older Scouts 3:16 OA Representative 4:24 Unit Elections 5:44 Understanding Inductions 6:20 Making OA Available 6:54 Unit OA Advisor 7:14 Den Chiefs & OA 8:16 Cub Scout Leaders 9:00 OA Steals Scouts? #scouterstan #scouts #scoutleader @ScouterStan © 2021 S Richards LLC
