A new, improved take on South Africa, from Lifemask. This is one of my favourite Roy Harper songs and IMO one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. I can't really understand the anti-apartheid metaphor, but even taken as a simple boy-girl love song it is deeply moving. And the original recording is impeccably produced, making use of multi-tracking and echo to create a swirl of vocals and guitars that build up to what I think is one of the most glorious musical moments that I know. Of course, all of that is impossible for me even to attempt, so I leave you with a "naked" rendition and a detailed guitar tutorial (tutorial starts around 5:30). This is another of those guitar parts that has Roy's signature all over it: economy combined with creativity. This means a very simple chord shape that moves up and down the neck, combined with fingerpicking that uses bendings, hammer-ons, pull-offs, open-strings, harmonics... well a bit of everything, really. Nothing too flashy, but enough not to get bored. And, of course, the much favored DADGAD tuning, in this case tuned down a half-tone to C#G#C#F#G#C#.
