NOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker’s personal views and understanding of technology use, emotional intelligence, and the brain. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... As a scientist, Gozde Yucel had not learned about feelings and empathy until faced head on with her son’s mental health crisis. Once she realized her son’s needs, she took a journey to learn empathy, eventually applying it in her scientific work to help other scientists who were struggling. This journey led Gozde to devise empathetic methods for use in STEM education. She formulated the “Soulful Scientist”--the best future version of the scientist we know. A scientist, mother, mediator, and author, after immigrating from Turkey, Gozde Yucel worked tirelessly within academia in developmental genetics at New York University and in stem-cell biology at Stanford University. Her successful career required perseverance and resilience, leaving little time for self-reflection. A glitch occurred in this life pattern when Gozde’s son had a mental health crisis. She took note of her well-being or lack thereof, and in response, Gozde began to implement empathic revelations into the lab. She now works as a trained conflict resolution coach who provides employees with team workshops and communication skills to enhance collaboration, productivity, and individual well-being. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
