John Schumann wrote and performed 'I was Only 19' during Act 1 of the 'Vietnam Requiem' on 6 June 2021 at Llewellyn Hall, Canberra, Australia. He speaks candidly about this song. The 'Vietnam Requiem' was directed by Chris Latham OAM, Artist-in-Residence at the Australian War Memorial. We brought together Australia’s leading composers and performing artists to create this memorable theatrical concert. The Requiem was deeply moving as it retold our stories from both abroad and at home, on the 50th anniversary of our withdrawal. It was designed to help heal the great wound created by this war in response to extensive veteran and community consultation, deep listening and research. It did honour veterans' service and their families, and the price paid by all who were touched by this war, including South Vietnamese Veterans and Boat People. We believe it continues to honour their sacrifices. Further information and other videos and music can be found at flowersofpeace.com.au.
