Now this beautiful slice of spiritual jazz & funky rock will catch many of you out coming as it's from a little known outfit from oakland put together for this one-off recording by local tenor sax player jeff jones who wanted to promote and give new artists a 'voice' in the arts and this was one such case...jones initially brought the musicans together in '71 and for the next three years of intense practice and rehearsal finally brought it all to fruitation at 'mantra studios' in san mateo january 1st '74 where the group played all the music in one continuous take!!! all that rehearsal/practice paid off for him as he was paying all the costs involved...the group here are jeff jones/emmons porter/jack spinovich/leonard franklin guitar/ray vega & rounded out by pianist steve espanosa...it took two more years to release the material on jones very own private press label 'the voice of the people record co' 1976 'the spirit of david' with only 500 copies pressed and to find one now of this very sought after disc would set you back over $1000!! jones would sucessfully promote free concerts under the name 'jazz in the parks' oakland...if you want a copy you better hurry up as 'frederiksberg records' reissued it earlier this year (it may already have sold out) to a audience eager to own a copy so check first if ordering...a standout for me on several tracks is the guitar work by franklin who deserves a special mention...
