Order The Borderline Personality Disorder Workbook by Dr. Fox: https://goo.gl/LQEgy1 Splitting is common in those with PDs, particularly those with NPD and BPD. Seeing people and situations as either black or white, or as all good or all bad is something that is also often applied to relationships. Many individuals along the NPD, BPD spectrum tend to see their relationships as all or nothing relationships, and this tends to cause significant difficulty in getting satisfaction out of those relationships, and it also increases the likelihood of relationship failure. In this video, we’re going to explore the all-or-nothing relationship. Splitting is a defense mechanism to keep the individual safe. It is often used once the individual’s core content is activated. If you’ve seen my other videos you know what I mean by core content. Splitting may make you feel safe in the short-term, but it tends to create many more issue in the long-term, such as depression, anxiety, fear, and even paranoia and psychosis in some cases. How to prevent the all or nothing relationship? Identify your core content, what is it inside you that drives you to feel the need to see your partner and your relationship as all encompassing? That thing that drives you, which may be abandonment, emptiness, worthlessness, vulnerability, etc. is your core content. Once you know your core content, then you need to recognize when it gets activated. Under what situations do you feel scared that you’re not getting 100% from your partner, that you don’t know 100% of your partner, and when do you demand the full 100% from your partner? When you know this, you can then challenge it. A mantra is a great tool to challenge your all or nothing relationship and to help lessen the intense need to split. Daniel J.
