This is Film Number Five in a series of five films that explore some of the textural potential of Lascaux Tusches. The series seeks to show some of the ways in which these Tusches can be used to make photo-positives for screen-printing. This film shows how John McGowan explores Lascaux Soft Ground Effect Tusche. The Tusche is a slow-drying viscous liquid and has been designed to produce effects similar to soft ground in traditional etching. He demonstrates how it can used to make collages of low-profile textured materials for screen-printing using an etching press. Also shown are methods to create textures using various tools and paper lifts. The film shows the textural work created in the studio and the resulting printed effects. John McGowan writes: I made my first film about Lascaux Tusches in 2016, as people viewing my “Rothersthorpe Lock” print often asked how it was made. I felt that a video was the best means of explanation. With the help of my friends I made that video and posted it on YouTube. I had no contact, at the time, with Lascaux. Four years later I received an email from Barbara Diethelm of Lascaux, expressing her interest in the film. I suggested that a short film about each of the tusches would be a good way to de-mystify them and would help fellow printmakers understand some of their potential. Barbara agreed and has helped fund the costs of the music and professional editing. The films express my own independent ideas and opinions. www.johnmcgowanprintmaker.co.uk www.lascaux.ch
