18 years since fire engulfed Delhi's Uphaar Grand theatre, justice continues to elude victims

New Delhi, June 13 (ANI): Eighteen years have passed since a fire tragedy at a cinema hall in New Delhi claimed many lives, but the victims and their families are still awaiting the judicial closure of the case. At least 59 people were killed and over 100 injured in a massive inferno that engulfed Uphaar Grand theatre in Delhi on June 13, 1997 during the premiere of a Bollywood movie which dramatised a 1971 battle between India and Pakistan, '[Border'. The inferno was a result of a small fire which had broken out in an electrical transformer which hours later exploded in flames. On Saturday, prayers were organised at a memorial to mark tragedy's anniversary where the kin and kith of the dead performed special rituals in the memory of their loved ones. In November 2007 Delhi high court found 12 people, including two of the influential owners of the Uphaar Grand - Sushil and Gopal Ansal - guilty of various charges including causing death due to negligence. Supreme Court upheld the conviction of the Ansal brothers and others in March 2014 but they are yet to be awarded the quantum of punishment.
