We don't really understand motivation until we can see some of the distinct types of motivation and how they contribute to emotional intelligence. What moves me isn't necessarily what moves you, and people who have some in-depth understanding of different motivational impulses will definitely have the advantage. We begin by distinguishing motivation from inspiration or externally focused drivers. These tend to be short-lived and not long-lasting. Leaders who rely too much on inspiration will experience frustration when people don't stay motivated. This video explores the key difference between external and internal motivation. The fundamental difference lies in the external drive of pursuing what we are attracted to, also known as extrinsic motivation, and the internal drive of fulfilling a purpose we care deeply about or intrinsic motivation. We can analyze external motivation or motivators into thematic categories such as knowledge, utility, surroundings, others, power and methodologies. You can further elaborate these into contrasting motivations such as the 12 Driving Forces model. Even understanding these differences on a functional level is a game changer. We can also explore internal motivation or motivators in terms of passions, purpose and persistence. Leaders with a high emotional intelligence exercise empathy and tune into the internal motivation of people they coach rather than relying on external motivators alone. Leaders with a low emotional intelligence miss the importance of motivation altogether and see employees with relatively lower levels of engagement. 00:00 Motivation, emotional intelligence and types of motivation 01:05 Motivation is not inspiration 03:16 External motivators 05:29 Emotional intelligence and motivation 06:00 Internal motivation 07:27 Exercising empathy and coaching people from their intrinsic motivation We work with leaders on increasing their emotional intelligence including personal motivation.
