UN Syria envoy meets National Security Council secretary

(20 Oct 2014) Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations' special envoy for Syria met with Admiral Ali Shamkhani, the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council in Tehran on Monday. The IRNA official news agency quoted Shamkhani as saying during the meeting that the irresponsible behaviour of some regional and western countries, and the arming of the Syrian opposition are key obstacles in the way of peace in Syria. According to the report, Shamkhani said that creating a new terrorist group to fend off the previous groups or foreign forces will lead to a deterioration of the Syrian crisis. He added that international conferences have been futile in their attempts to solve the crisis and have in some cases made things worse, IRNA said. In separate comments in the IRNA report, Mistura said that it was essential to use Iran's experience and participation in unravelling the Syrian crisis. He insisted that a political solution is the best instrument for confronting the threat of the Islamic State group, the news agency reported. Mistura, who is on a two-day trip to Tehran, met Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday.
