Noun and Its Types in English grammar. Learn English in Bangla. This video is on noun English grammar with examples and exercises with answers. The noun is a naming word. A noun is a word used as the name of person, place or thing. Meaning of thing in English grammar: i. Perceived by our five senses. ( Mountain, book) ii. Can’t perceived by senses. (Event, quality, idea etc) Types of nouns: 1. Proper noun 2. Common noun 3. Collective noun 4. Material noun 5. Abstract noun 6. Countable noun 7. Uncountable noun • Proper noun: Name a specific person, place or thing. A proper noun always begins with a capital letter. All parts of a proper noun begin with a capital letter. Proper nouns usually don’t have plurals. But have some exception • Common noun: Not particular or specific. It gives a ‘common name’ to a person, place, or thing. It is not capitalized like a proper noun in the middle of a sentence. • Collective noun: Represent a group of persons or things. Reflects one unit or one complete whole, so the verb is singular. • Material noun: It refers to a material or substance from which things are made. It is tangible. Generally “A and An” not used before a material noun. “The” is used when to refer to a specific thing. • Abstract noun: Name of action, quality, or state. Intangible. Generally abstract noun ending with –ism, -tion, –ness, -ship, -hood, -dom, -ment, -cy etc. Abstract noun are formed from adjectives, verbs and common nouns. • Countable nouns: Nouns that we can count. Common nouns and most of the collective nouns are countable noun. • Uncountable nouns: Nouns that we can’t count. Material nouns and abstract nouns are uncountable nouns. People of India and Bangladesh like to eat rice as a staple food. People: Common noun. India: Proper noun. Bangladesh: Proper noun. Rice: Material noun. Food: Common noun. 5.
