The Countering Kleptocracy Project | ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize 2023

Researchers investigating the flow of illicit wealth into the UK are informing Government policy to tackle the effects of economic crime, which costs the UK economy billions of pounds each year and can be a risk to national security. Research led by John Heathershaw, Professor of International Relations at the University of Exeter, provided evidence of how money laundering and ‘reputation laundering’ – where elites enhance their reputation through gifts to charities, universities, and political parties – are enabled by British financial, legal and public relations services. The project was shortlisted in the ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize 2023. The Prize, now in its 11th year, is an annual opportunity to recognise the success of ESRC-funded researchers in achieving and enabling outstanding economic or societal impact from their research.
