Our CANADA ROAD TRIP to VANCOUVER ISLAND, British Columbia Starts NOW 🚗🌲 Chemainus & Cathedral Grove

Today we are kicking off a trip that we’ve been wanting to do for a very long time: a road trip across the length of Vancouver Island! Sam grew up on the West Coast but moved away when he went to university, and I had never been there, so it was high time we both visited. To make things even more special, when our dads heard we were travelling to Vancouver Island, they both decided to come along, so we embarked on this road trip as a gang of 4! This is the first episode of our Vancouver Island road trip and it was mostly a travel day. We flew from Toronto to Vancouver to Victoria, and then picked up a rental car at the airport. We had to drive up to Mount Washington, which would act as our base for the first few days, but on the way up there we also stopped in the town of Chemainus, which is known for its many murals, and in Cathedral Grove, where we saw Douglas-fir trees that are over 800 years old! After a lightning-fast 11-minute flight from Vancouver to Victoria (our shortest ever!), we’re officially back on the island. This trip is extra special: not only is Sam returning to his childhood home for the first time in years, but both our dads have joined for the adventure, making this a memorable family journey across the length of Vancouver Island. 🏡 Sam’s Homecoming & Fresh Eyes Sam: Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Sam hasn’t visited in over a decade. This is a true homecoming. Audrey: Visiting for the first time, excited to experience everything the island has to offer. The Dads: Both fathers are pumped—one has lived out east for 50 years and never visited, while the other spent a third of his life here. 📱 Discovering with Trover We’re teaming up with Trover, a travel and photography app that helps you find geotagged photos and must-see sights. Throughout the road trip, we’ll use the app to unearth hidden gems, small towns, hikes, and unique restaurants all over the island. 🛣️ Scenic Drive North: Chemainus & Cathedral Grove After picking up our rental car, we set off toward Mount Washington, breaking up the journey with a couple of must-see stops: 🎨 Chemainus – The Mural Town Once a logging/mill town, Chemainus has reinvented itself with a collection of massive murals, transforming its streets into an outdoor art gallery. Even though we’re short on time, it’s clear we want to come back and explore more! 🌲 Cathedral Grove – MacMillan Provincial Park The Main Event: Cathedral Grove, a legendary old-growth forest with Douglas firs up to 800 years old and cedars that are absolute giants (75 meters tall, 9 meters in circumference). Impressions: Arriving just before sunset, the light streaming through moss and ferns feels almost magical—a true “wonderland.” Reflections: The preservation of this “max forest” (left undisturbed for centuries) is awe-inspiring. The sheer scale of the trees makes everyone a tree hugger, even if it takes three people to circle one trunk! 🏔️ Arrival at Mount Washington After a long day of travel, we check into our accommodations up in Mount Washington. Tired but happy, we opt for an easy indoor picnic: fresh bread, cheese, meats, veggies, and Spanish wine. First Impressions: The drive through forests and winding roads, the ancient trees, and the fresh island air have already made a lasting impression on everyone. 🚦 Looking Ahead This was mostly a travel day, but the excitement is just beginning.
