In today’s video, we continue our Vancouver Island road trip in partnership with Trover, this time doing a little exploring along the Comox area. This was another exciting day that featured our closest bear encounter to date, a chance visit to a winery owned by a famous Hollywood film director, and some fun at a beach with a name that will make you chuckle. First up, let's talk about the bear encounter. We had already spotted a black bear a few days prior while riding the ski lift up Mount Washington, but this time around we came across an even larger bear eating wild blackberries on the side of the road. It was early morning and there was no one else around. It was pure magic. That morning we visited Goose Spit Park in Comox, a place that we chose simply because we liked the sound of the name. We enjoyed a nice walk on the beach, met some friendly dogs, and simply enjoyed the scenery. Then it was onwards to a vineyard. When looking for things to do in the Comox area, we were surprised to find that there were several local wineries to visit. We chose one at random and ended up at Beaufort Vineyard and Estate Winery, which is owned by the Cameron Family…as in James Cameron the film director with movies like Titanic, Avatar, and Terminator to his name! We decided to a wine tasting while we were here and paid $5 to sample 5 wines, which is an excellent deal if you ask me. Later, in the afternoon, we went for a hike along a beautiful wooded trail in Seal Bay Nature Park until the rain eventually forced us to turn back. Comox Valley Adventures: Close Bear Encounters, Wine Tasting at James Cameron’s Vineyard & Goose Spit Park 🐻🍷🌲 | Vancouver Island Road Trip 🌅 Foggy Mornings & Goose Spit Park Our Vancouver Island road trip continues with a day of exploring around the Comox area! We kicked off the morning at Goose Spit Park—yes, the name makes us laugh every time—where we were met with heavy fog rolling in off the water. Visibility was so low at first we couldn’t see the mountains, but as we made our way down to the beach, the skies gradually cleared. It was the perfect spot for a morning stroll along the ocean, and the park was buzzing with families, dog-walkers, and the friendly laid-back spirit Comox is known for. 🐻 Once-in-a-Lifetime Bear Sighting The highlight of our morning happened en route from Mount Washington: our closest black bear encounter to date! While driving, we spotted a big ball of black fur grazing on berries by the roadside. We carefully pulled over, rolled down the window, and watched in awe as the bear foraged, completely unfazed by our presence. It was a magical, safe wildlife moment that left us grinning from ear to ear. We’ve now spotted two bears this trip, and with six deer already counted, we’re still on the hunt for the elusive Vancouver Island elk! 🏖️ Strolling, Bird-Watching & A Lucky Seal After our bear encounter, we explored more of Goose Spit Park. We wandered the pebble beach, watched Canadian geese, and even caught a glimpse of a playful seal splashing around near some paddle boarders. As always, our day was inspired by recommendations we found using the Trover app’s “near me” feature—super handy for spontaneous adventures! 🍷 Wine Tasting at Beaufort Vineyard: James Cameron’s Estate Next, we decided to sample the local wine scene. We landed at Beaufort Vineyard and Estate Winery, owned by none other than film director James Cameron (of Titanic, Avatar, and Terminator 2 fame)! For just $5, we each sampled five wines—a bargain with a view. Ortega: Fruity, with pineapple and pear aromas. Borealis Blend: Three grapes, specifically grown to withstand Vancouver Island’s rain and short seasons—sweet and soft. Rosé: A pretty blend of white and red grapes, great for summer sipping. Sabotage Red: The vineyard’s pride, made from thinner-skinned reds—winner of a double gold medal at the Canadian Wine Festival. Okanagan Blend: Grapes sourced from the hotter Okanagan region—bold and smooth. We enjoyed learning how the northern latitude and rainy climate shape the wines, and the whole experience felt like a hidden gem. If you’re wine-curious in the Comox Valley, this is a must-visit! 🌳 Hiking Seal Bay Nature Park After wine tasting, we burned off some energy with a hike at Seal Bay Nature Park. The rain paused long enough for us to meander through lush, moss-draped forests of fir, cedar, and Douglas fir. The forest here is vibrantly green and dense—an outdoor classroom for tree-spotting and pure west coast serenity.
