On August 2, 1926, a group of Circus Elephants escaped from their train in the city of Cranbrook, and stampeded into the woods surrounding the region. One of these elephants, named Charlie Ed, managed to avoid recapture for 6 weeks, all the while extensively exploring the mountains. In honour of Charlie Ed, nearly 100 years later, The Lost Elephant Bikepacking Event was born. The routes change every year, but the Lost Elephant is famous for extremely challenging courses and beautiful views. I'm taking on the 480km Jumbo Route (There is a slightly shorter Dumbo Route option). This grueling race features a challenging loop with a staggering 10,000m of climbing, pushing riders to their limits on extremely technical ups and downs. Navigating the heat of summer and tackling the rugged terrain in one push will prove to be an ultimate bikepacking test for everyone taking part. Note: The true story of Charlie Ed is certainly not a happy or whimsical one. While the ride we have today is all for fun, the plight of captive animals like Charlie is certainly not joyful. The true story can be found here, but it's not a great bedtime story. We do not condone any of this animal abuse, https://www.cranbrooktownsman.com/new...
