(4 Aug 2023) INTERVIEW RUSHES INCLUDING BELOW: ASSOCIATED PRESS Statesboro, Georgia - 4 August 2023 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Lucas, baking expert - on the new show: (Reporter: "Obviously it's got 'Nailed It' in its kind of DNA, but it also seems to be kind of mixed with those baking shows where you have a whole team of people and you kind of follow them on a journey like 'Bake Off' or 'American Baking Show.' Do you think that's about right?") "Yeah, that's it. It still has that key element of what 'Nailed It' is, by just making it in a different format where honestly it's like so easy to get attached to the bakers because you want to root for them to make it to the very end." 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Lucas, baking expert - on relating to the contestants as self taught: "I think it's very easy to just get discouraged, especially when you try something and it just does not turn out the way you've maybe envisioned or you wanted it to. So, I was just making sure I was adamant that these things don't always just happen overnight. It takes time to grow skills and know, with me and Erin here, we're here coaching you. Just take in whatever we're saying to you, make sure that you kind of grasp these concepts of what we're teaching. And, as you progress, you'll see that you're getting better and better. So, I do think just me being self taught, I was able to really let them know, like from a personal level of experience, what you all are experiencing right now about the failures that you may have. But you know, it always gets better." 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Lucas, baking expert - on the skills needed: "The baking, getting that down is always, I think, the first step before even trying to go into the art of it. So, when I was teaching myself at first, I made sure that I tried to figure out a recipe that worked for me and my family were, you know, my taste testers. And I wanted to make sure that even from the very beginning I was like, I want to make sure the cakes taste good before I keep trying to make these. And then once I got that down, then I kept going. And because I'm self-taught, you know, in all aspects of, basically all aspects of art. What I shocked myself, when I started to use modelling chocolate because I was really sculpting like cakes and I was like, I'm really sculpting art. I can probably just do this out of clay, like, you know. And then I started to paint them. I was like, I'm not a painter, it was a lot of things that I even surprised myself to just have taught myself and just - and I make sure I do a lot of research before I just jump into things. So that way when I try them, at least my first attempts aren't that bad." 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Lucas, baking expert - on his family asking for different flavors: "I would bring them cake all the time and, you know, because I give them away, I try to use a flavour that, you know, is commonly liked. So, I usually would always do vanilla and I would switch them up every now and then. But, you know, usually in a video I'm trying to make different coloured layers and stuff, so it usually has to be vanilla. And then eventually they're like, 'can you bring another flavour?' So, so yeah, I think they probably - I think they were more so tired of the same flavour of cake than the cake." 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Lucas, baking expert - on donating the cakes he bakes: 12. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Lucas, baking expert - on why baking shows are so popular: STORYLINE: Plus, a lot of cake. Lucas admits that, while he was honing his own talents, his family were his taste testers.
