Thomas Adams is a Professor at the NTNU Department of Energy and Process Engineering. Title: Building the Trans-Atlantic Energy Bridge: Creating an energy pipeline from Canada to Europe with new technologies Abstract: Canada is one of the largest exporters of primary energy to the world, and yet it was largely incapable of supplying mainland Europe with critical energy after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the cutoff of Russian energy. The Trans-Atlantic Energy Bridge is a proposed new supply chain that would transport energy from Canada to mainland Europe in the form of hydrogen and related chemicals, LNG, biofuels, waste-derived fuels, and nuclear-derived fuels. This talk discusses some possible technical energy pathways in the context of sustainability, energy security, and political appetite since energy politics is a major factor. It is important for Norway as well because Norway is in a similar situation as an energy supplier to mainland Europe, and the Trans-Atlantic Energy Bridge would likely connect in large part to current and proposed Norwegian supply chains in the North Sea, such as in certain proposed offshore Hydrogen and Electricity energy hubs.
