In this video I’m sharing the process behind Fading Light, Silent Walls - an expressive, atmospheric landscape painted in oils and cold wax medium. I began with soft pastels to lay down the first hints of colour, then lightly drew the building with pencil (though I later painted over it after deciding it was in the wrong place!). From there I worked with a moody palette of Phthalo Blue, Cadmium Red, Titanium White, and Payne’s Grey, all mixed with cold wax medium in roughly a 50:50 ratio. Using my trusty palette knife and catalyst wedge, I built up layers to create an evocative, misty atmosphere. To bring the building back, I used pencil and a scratchy tool to add subtle lines and marks, then gently skimmed over it with Payne’s Grey, giving it a ghostly presence that adds texture and mystery to the piece.
