Abstract Landscape with Derwent Inktense, Gouache and Pastels

Today I’m sharing a quiet abstract landscape study made with Derwent Inktense, gouache and pastels. At just over the halfway point, the painting starts to feel brighter and more traditional than I wanted. That’s the moment I realise the mood isn’t right for me. I bring in more Inktense, re-blend the surface, and use a mop brush to soften and blur the forms until the piece loosens again. From there I rebuild with pastels, letting the painting settle into a more subdued, atmospheric note. For me it's important to respond to what a painting asks for, even if it means almost destroying what came before, and to choose feeling and atmosphere over familiarity.
