How I Painted a Messy Expressive Portrait

Sometimes you just have to get out of your head and let the paint move. So today after two failed landscapes, I pivoted and painted this extremely loose portrait using Derwent Inktense, gouache and pastels. The whole process was messy in the best way. You’ll see moments where I smear the nose, then do the same to the mouth! That was the point. I wanted to stop controlling everything and let instinct take over. There’s also this magical shift when I start working with the pastels and the face suddenly begins to emerge, almost like it was waiting underneath all along It’s not a tidy or perfect portrait - it’s raw, expressive and exactly what I needed to paint today.
