RUN STATS: Run Name: The "Y" Area Name: Mott Canyon Location: Heavenly Rating: ♦♦ (Double Black) My Personal Rating Opinion: ♦♦ (Double Black) Lift Taken: Dipper Express Maximum Pitch: 40 degrees Run Type: Chute Total Run Length: 0.5 mi. (this is from the top of Gate 1 to the Mott Canyon Lift) Total Vertical Drop: 902 feet. (this is from the top of Gate 1 to the Mott Canyon Lift) Run Aspect: North SNOW CONDITIONS: Soft snow with a few hard spots here and there DATE OF RECORDING: March 25, 2024 DESCRIPTION: The "Y" is a legendary run in Heavenly's infamous Mott Canyon expert zone. It's not only one of the steepest and most challenging in Mott Canyon but is one of the steepest runs that I've attempted so far. I'm not sure if this is a hot take, but I consider this run to be steeper and more challenging than any of the 3 Killebrew Canyon runs (Stateline Chute, Pipeline, and Bob's Boulevard) that I attempted on the same day. This is despite the fact that Killebrew is generally considered significantly more challenging than Mott. So I'll say it right now, if you can do this run, you can do pretty much every run in Killebrew Canyon minus The Fingers which consists of the hardest lines at Heavenly. For starters just getting to the top of The "Y" is a pain-in-the-ass. It involves descending one of the most sketchy and narrow ridge-traverses that I've done at a ski resort. This ridge-traverse was just about as bad as I remembered. Not only is there a ton of exposed rock, but you have crazy drops on either side of you making for very little room for error. It's arguably the single most technical part of the whole experience. Once you get to the top of the run, you have a few different points that you can enter the chute. Last time, my dumbass opted for the steepest entry and I had to slide down most of it. Today, I had no idea how the snow conditions were with that entry so I decided to ski the entry a bit further down. In hindsight, that steeper entry might have actually been better as the entrance I skied was corniced. This is one of the steeper cornices that I've dropped, though far from the biggest. Luckily the snow in the chute had plenty of good grip. I've done a lot of technical drop-ins at this point so the fact that I was still hesitant about this one was something I didn't expect. From there, the chute is insanely steep all the way to the bottom. Even though there's not a lot of exposure or technical features to dodge, just the sheer pitch got my blood pumping. Honestly, this is a great run to practice steep turns on some very steep terrain. I was shocked with how steep The "Y" felt all these years later. I really expected to absolutely demolish this run and while I skied it well in my opinion, it was definitely still intimidating. That being said, my experience this time around was of course way better than last time! I actually had a lot of fun skiing this run. Aesthetically, The "Y" isn't anything to standout-ish unlike some of the Killebrew terrain, but it was still pretty badass to ski. This is probably up there with Snake Eyes as my favorite run in all of Mott Canyon. I don't know if there's any run in Mott Canyon harder than The "Y" (maybe something like Rocky Point or North 40, idk) but if there is, let me know and I'll try it. For me, this is easily the hardest run in all of Mott Canyon. And like I said above, The "Y" is in my opinion harder than the vast majority of runs in Killebrew Canyon. But it's a lot of fun, and I'm really happy I was finally able to get redemption on it. I definitely recommend this chute for any expert skier at Heavenly looking for a very steep chute. Just make sure you go in knowing that this is much harder than most of the other Gate 1 runs!
