Rising power bills and reduced solar feed-in tariffs are helping to fuel a boom in battery sales. But despite the increasing interest in storing solar energy, battery installations are still way behind rooftop solar. More than 4 million Australian households and businesses have rooftop solar but, despite the additional savings, only about one in 12 or 320,000 have battery storage, according to solar energy consultancy SunWiz. The high purchase price of batteries has been a barrier for many, with the average cost about $10,000 per system. Current modelling estimates the payback time on a battery system at about eight years for a typical household. A wide range of experts, including former RBA deputy governor Guy Debelle, are calling for the federal government to introduce household battery subsidies to encourage uptake. He says instead of handing out energy bill rebates, money should be spent on subsidies for batteries and increased incentives for bringing down the cost of solar. Rhiana Whitson meets one homeowner, who's installing a home battery after their solar feed-in tariff was slashed from 15 cents per kilowatt-hour to 3 cents per kilowatt-hour. #ABCBusiness Subscribe: http://ab.co/1svxLVE Read more here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03-1...
