Reimagine Research: Increasing impact through strategic communications To get to Net Zero, we need creativity. Science and research must be hyper-connected and deliver stories that are thoughtful and constructive. Conversations about climate change and environmental wellbeing are often unnecessarily complicated, polarised, and clouded by conflicting information and confusing narratives. To engage all of society, we need to transform ideas into campaigns and content that influence. Academic research can inspire change, but realising its potential requires new, imaginative thinking. The evolution of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) sees increasing emphasis on creativity. In line with this, the session highlights innovative ways to achieve greater significance and reach. Jonny Prest explores alternative approaches to engaging diverse stakeholders and transforming complex information into compelling content. Chapters: 00:00 – Introduction Opening remarks on the importance of creative communication in advancing research impact and societal engagement. 03:13 – Research Communications Challenges Discussion on the primary obstacles in research communications: limited stakeholder engagement, disconnect with non-academic audiences, and challenges in understanding and measuring impact. 10:16 – Category: Research Category Design Explanation of category design and segmentation for research, including identifying stakeholder pain points and understanding the space in which research operates. 17:03 – Finding Purpose Exploration of connecting research to stakeholder values, setting purpose in alignment with societal beliefs, and the importance of complementary purpose setting. 27:37 – Creating an Identity Establishing a clear identity for research projects that resonates with stakeholders, enhances perceived value, and aligns with shared vision and goals. 41:10 – Creating a Compelling Story Crafting narratives that increase engagement and constructive action, using a framework inspired by story archetypes such as hero, guide, and villain. 44:05 – Project Delivery Case studies on delivering research communication projects effectively, including insights on gamification and creative approaches for broad engagement. 49:15 – Lasting Impact: Measuring Impact Beyond Publication Approaches to measuring the impact of research beyond academia, emphasising systemic change, policy influence, and clarity in campaign objectives.
