What a night at Kirklington Road as Rainworth Miners Welfare hosted Shirebrook Town in the United Counties League Division One! Before kick-off, I spoke with both managers about tonight’s clash and their ambitions for the season. On the pitch, it was Shirebrook who started stronger but, as has been the case too often this season, they couldn’t take their chances… Then came the turning point. A back pass to keeper Harrison Kissane bobbled horribly, he lost control, fell, and handled the ball outside the box – RED CARD! From the resulting free-kick, the initial shot was saved but Rainworth pounced on the rebound to go ahead. Down to 10 men, Shirebrook showed real fight and found a deserved equaliser early in the second half with a tidy finish. The away fans, packed into the stand alongside the Rainworth faithful, were by far the louder of the two throughout the night. But heartbreak struck late on… Rainworth delivered a free-kick into the box and a close-range header found the net to seal a 2-1 win. Shirebrook’s 10 men threw everything at it but just couldn’t find the equaliser.
