...Bob Mayer Road-Tested a Metrobus WTVJ's Bob Mayer anchored newscasts and reported news ranging from breaking stories to scientific and medical breakthroughs -- and he exposed restaurants that weren't as clean as they should have been. Mayer also test-drove new cars and reported his findings. From Cadillacs and Lincolns to Mustangs to K-Cars, Mayer drove them all. But on June 18, 1976 WTVJ aired what may have been Bob Mayer's biggest test drive: A 1977 AM General bus, soon to be added to Metro Transit's fleet. Mayer rated the "futuristic-looking" bus, with its "cavernous interior" seating forty-seven people, pretty highly. He even thought it drove well, although power steering would have been a plus. Gas mileage -- four miles per gallon -- would have been pretty dismal for a passenger car. But for a bus? Maybe not so bad?
