Exploring Smoo Cave | Hidden Gem of the Scottish Highlands

Step inside one of Scotland’s most dramatic and mysterious natural wonders — Smoo Cave, nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands near Durness. Carved by both sea and freshwater over millennia, this unique cave is a must-see on the North Coast 500 route. Visitors can explore inside Smoo Cave beyond the main chamber by joining a guided tour that includes a short boat ride deeper into the cave system. The cave is open to the public year-round, and the main chamber, featuring a dramatic 20-meter waterfall, is accessible via a wooden walkway free of charge. For those wishing to venture further, guided tours are offered from April through October, subject to weather conditions. We were unlucky as the boat tours were cancelled due to excessive precipitation.
