RUSHCLIFFE PARISH #38: SAXONDALE Saxondale – “Saxon’s Valley” Now here’s a place which ought to leave you all suitably confused when I’m done with it – but I’m going to do my best to explain it all. This is Saxondale, a tiny village on the Western fringes of Bingham, and located on the old route of the A52. With only two streets and a sporadic selection of houses, you’d be forgiven for thinking this one doesn’t have a lot to talk about. Not so, however. A few years ago, Saxondale would have been a place you might have driven through if you use the A52 on a regular basis. Nowadays the new route of the road bypasses the village and runs into tbe brand new Bingham Interchange on the much improved A46. The presence of the new traffic island means that the previous junction – Saxondale Roundabout, which was hated by many a motorist – now has much less importance. The village itself is too small to sustain any major facilities, except for a garage at Manor Farm. It does also though, have a model raceway for remote controlled cars. Now if we were sticking to the parish boundaries religiously here, Saxondale would be struggling for anything else to talk about. There’s an old railway line, it makes a lot more sense to save that for the Bingham episode. However, just over the boundary, there is something we can add on – the site of a former hospital.
