In this lesson from our course on Biblical Interpretation and Biblical Theology (in partnership with the Alexandrian Institute), we pause our discussion of progressive revelation to explore the hermeneutical implications that flow from it. We talk about why biblical theology and hermeneutics belong together in a kind of “interpretive spiral”: the better we understand the Bible’s unified storyline, the better we interpret individual texts—and careful interpretation, in turn, deepens our grasp of the storyline. Because what the Bible is shapes how we read it, we approach Scripture as fully human writing (with real genres, grammar, and historical settings) and also as God’s unfolding revelation that climaxes in Christ. From there, we lay out several key implications: (1) Progressive revelation means growth in content—God reveals more over time, not by changing truth, but by expanding and clarifying it. (2) Later revelation sharpens earlier revelation—we don’t pretend we “don’t know the rest of the story,” because the canon helps us see how earlier seeds grow into later fulfillment. (3) Earlier revelation is foundational for later revelation—Genesis (especially chapters 1–3) sets deep structural patterns that echo through the tabernacle, temple, exile/exodus motifs, and ultimately the new creation. (4) The canon is the ultimate context—Scripture interprets Scripture, and the final climactic revelation is Jesus Christ. If you’re working to read the Bible faithfully—without flattening it or fragmenting it—this lesson will help you think more clearly about how God’s Word unfolds organically, and how that should shape the way we interpret every passage. #jesuschrist #biblicaltheology #salvationhistory #hermeneutics #bibleinterpretation #theology
