Under the rain and hail and in the summer sun I wandered , and in thy light oh sun I grew . Alone but in thy care not alone . I watched as endless nights in winter came and snow fell and covered trees and soil. And in thy abscence I sang songs and made up tales for thee, as all creation rested and trees sheding leaves awaited thy return .And then came summers long when the wounds are mended and the mind finds peace in thy presence once more . And seeds awaken life anew and nature flourishes and renews itself , while flowers bloom , and dress their most beautifull colors to greet thee. And I watched the stary jewels and patterns you dress oh nightsky. Radiant birds and bears and trees that mark the way at night , flames far , souls wandering the sky. And i saw creatures that prey while others sleep , only show themselves in thy abscence , and heard far and wide their cries , And cherished the song of ghosts that lament the absence of light ! And I saw animals and trees and men take form in clouds and travel the sky! Beyond !To lands of endlessness. And become rain that washed the stones and watered thirsty lands. And I tasted thy fruits oh mother earth, and the gifts of thy soil , and the flesh of creatures made to exist in thy bottomless seas , where thine secrets are kept in the depths , where no man will ever be born and no man will reach. And I watched thy kingdom , light , with eyes not obstructed by the dark, with a heart not chained in ignorance , but with the mind of a child that wants to discover everything. I watched and i unserstood . And years and aeons passed that I watched. Sunrises and sunsets over the horizon , where heaven meets the realms of men, When in this sunset of my own I was reminded my oath. And a voice from within screams " leave them , leave the bound to be , remember the stranger , look around you . Rest your final years under the warmth of the sun and rejoice , you alone made it. You alone deserve the sun " . Silence , deceiver! I screamed. Thee , whose voice commands I let go . many times i refused thy call , servant of chains and fear , too many times I heard thy voice to not know who thou art. I remember thee in the cave , and I heard thy voice speak through loneliness in the ascent . It was thy speech who convinced them to stay chained, thee when they bowed to the fires and when ,one by one , in darkness fell.I know thee , for thou have always been with me , architect of prisons, builder of caves , my own flesh and blood,silence now, so wombs untouched by thy rot may birth! And remember. It was thee that I defeated first. There is no man that commands the sun. Nor one man alone that deserves it . For far too long I stayed , to rejoice in the godly radiance and warmth , alas radiance and warmth are to be shared ,and even if my heart dreads the return to the terrible cave and what I may find , poisoned , rotten , there, or on the way . And I am certain ,a journey back will not exist for me , but in the cave ,fitting and joyfull as the cause commands ,where in darkness born, now radiant I shall die . I ate and drunk the fruits of the world , I brought myself up from the terrible depths on hope that I would see the truth . And the truth I saw , and lived, and ate and learned. And with mine eyes i saw the realms where gods are born and gods reside. And I filled my eyes and mind with light . May it stay with me in my darkest hours yet to come ! And in the light I bathed and the endlessness of the sky I observed. May what I bring back help even one of them ,if only one , like it did for me. For all should know , and it's my burden and joy to deliver the will of the sun ! And I remember the stranger smiling on his death and only now I know why . For in my dream two beasts were fighting , And one of them was me ! context: This is a concept album, narrating a version of Plato's allegory of the cave from his work "republic" . The narration happens in 1st person in the entirety of the lyrics,throughout the whole album.The original work is used to project upon , one's quest for truth and self.
