Adventure is what we seek and remember. It can be realized through personal experiences, of course, and through the lives and travels of others. Lifetime Learning and the University of Virginia Press showcased several books that take us to new places and introduce us to modern-day adventurers. We heard from author Earl Swift on Journey on the James, a paddle down Virginia’s iconic river starting at the very beginning in the Alleghenies of western Virginia and ending at the mouth of the river on the eastern shore of Virginia. Swift took us to Richmond, Scottsville, Lake Moomaw, and Lynchburg, to name a few of the intriguing spots along the way. Then we met foreign correspondent Negley Farson, whose life and treks are chronicled by Rex Bowman and Carlos Santos in their brand-new, vividly detailed adventure biography Almost Hemingway. The Wall Street Journal reviewer Bill Heavey writes, “You could make up a character like Negley Farson, but most people wouldn’t believe you.” Farson’s exploits took him to World War I Russia, all over interwar Europe, to India, where he broke the news of Gandhi’s arrest, and later to Africa and South America. Part journalist, part author, part avid fly fisherman, but always an adventurer, Farson broke the mold and lived his life to the fullest (when he wasn’t living off the grid in British Columbia, that is).
