Ghana has marked 69 years of independence, reflecting on a journey defined by democratic transitions, economic development, and a strong role in regional leadership across West Africa. Often regarded as one of the continent’s most stable democracies, Ghana has built a reputation for peaceful elections, institutional continuity, and active engagement within regional bodies such as ECOWAS. As celebrations unfolded, Nigeria and other African countries extended congratulations, reaffirming longstanding diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties with Accra. Yet the anniversary has also renewed debate about the resilience of Ghana’s democratic institutions, the pressures facing its economy, and its future influence in shaping continental leadership. Political philosopher Simon Tsike-Sossah joins the conversation to reflect on Ghana’s democratic journey, the economic realities confronting the country, and what the next chapter may hold for one of West Africa’s most influential states.
