A brief rehearsal excerpt from the Sanctus of the Lima Mass, where we sing “Pleni sunt caeli et terra, ah,” meaning “heaven and earth are full of Your glory.” The little “ah” is a breath of wonder, a human pause before praise. The Mass is named in honor of Eugénia de Jesus Lima, one of Portugal’s greatest accordionists and a recipient of the Ordem do Infante D. Henrique. Her father, Mário António de Lima, was an accordion tuner who nurtured her early talent. Personal note. My grandmother’s surname is De Jesus. Any family link is unlikely since “De Jesus” is a very common Portuguese surname, yet there is quiet joy in singing a Mass that carries the De Jesus name.
