MGY MKC SOS | TITANIC calling OLYMPIC, distress. As the RMS TITANIC slipped beneath the icy waters of the North Atlantic she maintained near continuous contact with her own sister-ship OLYMPIC. The elder sibling had left New York the day before and was steaming east towards the stricken liner. She initially failed to grasp the direness of the situation unfolding 500 miles away. That is until TITANIC informed her they were loading passengers into the lifeboats. This was almost incomprehensible. The lifeboats were meant to function as ferries between a rescue ship and an injured one. The crew would not be setting passengers adrift in the vast emptiness of the North Atlantic without a compelling reason: TITANIC was mortally wounded and sinking fast. Her sister OLYMPIC raced to the scene but the distance -- a full days sailing -- was simply too great. The next morning CARPATHIA delivered the tragic news. TITANIC was gone and 1500 people had perished along with her.
