Mar 16, 2021 FULL VIDEO: You can find the full video in CAM MemberZone. https://caninearthritis.co.uk/member-... Good observational skills can help us to identify changes in our dog’s movement, which could result in earlier diagnosis of disease, as well as explain some behaviours. Gemma Hodson joins CAM’s Nicki Bell to tell us more about assessing posture and gait in dogs. Using a presentation with video and stills, it’s emphasised how important it is to appreciate a normal gait in order to recognise an abnormal one. Using videos created by Dr Martin Fischer ( / dogs-in-motion ) we see what a correct walk and trot should look like in one breed of dog and Gemma stresses the need to understand how your breed or combination of breeds should move. There are also a number of videos taken by her students showing what is required when taking video for analysis by therapists and vets as well as by the owner themselves. Gemma then introduces us to Animal Centred Education (ACE) and free work. This is a technique used to assess gait and posture and can be used as a therapy for various painful and behavioural problems as well as aiding diagnosis of issues. The session moves on to a discussion of coat pattern/colour changes and we see a range of photos where these changes were indicative of underlying pain. The session ends with the 'shake off' and what it can tell us about the dog, especially when used in conjunction with other assessments. Gemma has lived a life with dogs of various breeds and grew up in a house full of show dogs She initially studied at Hartpury College for a career with horses, going on to work at show jumping and event yards along with hydrotherapy centres. In the early 2000s, her interest in how pain affects movement and behaviour increased after one of her horses developed gastric ulcers. This soon became an obsession and she became increasingly aware of dogs experiencing difficulties from an early age. Wanting to expand on her observational skills, she trained under Sarah Fisher, before deepening her knowledge of canine anatomy, physiology & movement alongside massage and rehabilitation with ICAT & the OCN in London. Gemma now combines her passion for canine behaviour and movement to help dog guardians get to the bottom of their dog’s problematic behaviours using gait and posture analysis to shine a light on potential issues. She is often called in by other canine professionals to work with their clients for additional support and advice, and more recently has started teaching other canine professionals to do what she does so that more help and support can be given to guardians and their dogs (https://www.allaboutthedogtherapy.co.....
